About

Jannine Rickards, winemaker and founder, is making very small batches of dynamic wine, and with an endless supply of exciting ideas up her sleeve, is a producer to keep an eye on!

Jannine experienced her first vintage in Hawke’s Bay 2003. Since then, she has done many harvests in New Zealand and overseas – spending time in Burgundy, Beaujolais, Adelaide Hills, Champagne, South Africa, California and Oregon. Her home is now back in Wairarapa where she did much of her training. Her passions are hunting with her partner Mick, permaculture, organics, and growing and sourcing food to feed their whanau, friends and themselves.

The Huntress label says a lot about Jannine and her wine… “The theme of Huntress is related to my love of the bush and the coast which is depicted in the labels, they are symbolic of my lifestyle in the Wairarapa. Huntress wines are made with the intention of being an expression of the Wairarapa, wild, pure and honest. The Kereuru on the Pinot Noir label is likely my spirit animal if I come back as a bird..   also incorporated is my taonga (bone carving my whanau gave me) on the back label. It represents ever changing and diverse journey of life” – Jannine Rickards.

Her love of hunting, fishing, foraging and the idea of living from the land is something that she thinks of when making all of her wines. Intentionally looking to bring layers to the wines that will unfold with a delicious feast of wild foods and homegrown vegetables.
