About
For Haidee, winemaking was never part of a carefully mapped plan. It emerged instead from a love of travel, discovery, and a curiosity about the world that quietly found its place in the cellar.
Her first vintage in 2010 at Vidal in Hawke’s Bay was the beginning. Almost immediately, she was drawn to the physical, fast-paced nature of cellar work and the culture that surrounds vintage. A following season in California, taken on as a very green 21-year-old, sealed it. Winemaking was not just a job. It was the adventurous life she had imagined for herself, unfolding in real time.
What continues to draw Haidee to wine is its deeply personal nature. Winemaking offers a rare opportunity to interpret a place, a grape, and a moment in time, and to hold all of that, along with personality, in a single bottle. Pouring a glass of your own wine is both nerve-wracking and incredibly special. It is an honest reflection of instinct, effort, and intention.
Like many small producers, Haidee faces very real challenges. Building brand visibility, managing cashflow, securing organic grower contracts, and carrying responsibility for every moving part of the business are all part of the reality. Layered into this is the balancing act of prioritising her two young boys, a role as demanding and meaningful as any harvest.
Rather than dulling her creativity, these pressures sharpen it. They keep Haidee instinctive, adaptable, and deeply connected to her work. Wine, for her, is humbling and grounding, and endlessly surprising. It asks patience, resilience, and presence, and gives back something far greater in return.
Halite Wines is an honest expression of that journey. Thoughtful, intuitive wines shaped by experience, place, and a life lived fully alongside the vines.

This Halite Sangiovese has that soft, suede-like tannin and light, elegant frame… a savoury dense core to it makes this perfect for a charcuterie board - perhaps even some venison? It’s approachable, gentle and super drinkable.
And that’s very Haidee Johnson, the maker behind Halite. She’s been quietly building this label with intention and heart for a few years now, crafting wines that are honest, thoughtful, and unforced.

Grown on alluvial silt loam soils and shaped by a near-perfect vintage of warm days and cool nights, it delivers both structure and freshness in equal measure.
Hand-picked by friends and family, and fermented using a natural pied de cuve, the winemaking is gentle and intentional, preserving purity and detail.
This LDR charms with layers of wild cherry, bramble, floral, and earthy notes. Juicy and fruit-forward, it delivers a perfect balance of texture, length, and concentration while remaining effortlessly drinkable.
